Some people need silence while they’re writing, but that’s so not me. Maybe that comes from starting my writing career when I had four little kids zooming around the house in a havoc hurricane. Or maybe it’s from the more recent days (years) spent writing while the room next to me is filled with teens playing Rock Band. Regardless, I’m okay with noise, lol, and I usually have music playing while I work.
Sometimes evocative instrumentals are perfect. Other times pop tunes (some of which I’d never voluntarily listen to any other time) are just right. For my latest project, it’s been a mix of folk tunes and psychedelic rock.
I usually accumulate songs gradually as I work on any given project, choosing them either because the lyrics or music/mood suit a particular scene or character, or because they fit the overall tone of the story. Here’s the playlist for FOLLOWING CHELSEA:
Heavily Broken – The Veronicas
State of Love and Trust – Pearl Jam
Indifference – Pearl Jam
When it all Falls Apart – The Veronicas
No Sleep Tonight – The Faders
Wonderful – Everclear
Louis Riel – The Ghost is Dancing
4Ever – The Veronicas
Hard Sun – Eddie Vedder
Don’t Panic – Coldplay
The Whole Wide World – Wreckless Eric
Count on Me – Default
